  1. As with everything Nigerian, the Abba Kyari/Hushpuppi fraud case has taken on a predictably ethnoreligious hue. I’ve read some people claim that Kyari is being targeted by America because he is a Muslim. Ha! Well, Hushpuppi is also a Muslim. His full name is Ramon Olorunwa Abbas. Most Muslims will recognize Abbas as a Muslim name but probably not Ramon. Ramon is the Yoruba Muslim domestication of Abdulrahman. Read my July 13, 2014 column titled “Top 10 Yoruba Names You Never Guessed Were Arabic Names” to understand how Abdulrahman became Ramon (which is also sometimes rendered as Ramonu or Raymond). The name is #7 on my list. Kyari’s replacement, announced earlier today, is a Tunji Disu, another Muslim. Disu is the Yoruba Muslim domestication of Idris. That name is #3 on my list.   I cannot speak for the entire Italy but I can, for sure, speak for the region where I am from, the Upper Valley of the river Serio, in the province of Bergamo. In this area there are two villages, Fino del Monte and Rovetta (and to a lesser degree, Clusone, my hometown) that have a very strong relationship with Nigeria (and also Ghana and Benin). When Italy was in abysmal poverty the mountain regions were probably the poorest of all. Emigration was a very common thing and, for some reasons that are not entirely clear to me, instead of emigrating to America, Argentina, France or Switzerland like most Italians did, people from my home province moved first in Ghana (around 1910) and later to the neighbouring countries, with most of them settling in Nigeria.   NNAMDI KANU AND THE PROFESSOR (A COMPARISON) Is Nnamdi Kanu just a noise maker or a well calculated planner?   Suya isn’t a breakfast food, true, but I’ve never had trouble getting some after work, or for an afternoon snack. It’s usually available by the time folks are getting off work in the early evenings. Now in my old Abuja neighborhood of Jabi, the street stalls didn’t get fired up until dusk, that is true. This was because the sidewalks are unshaded and hot until the sun starts to go down. Also bush bars typically rely on guys grabbing a beer or two after work, before heading home and Jabi food stalls were for neighborhood folks who’d already gotten home, which meant a slightly later crowd. I’m guessing this may be a Lagos question, given how common I’ve seen suya served in the afternoon in both small towns and all around Abuja, along with times I was visiting friends in Jos and Lokoja. We have the law for the North and the law for the South. In the North, terrorists are called bandits, government negotiate with them and pay them huge amount of money for their terrorism. In the South, unarmed freedom fighters are called terrorists, government arrest them and even kill them at will. In the North, police don’t arrest criminals or extort motorists. In the South, police arrest innocent citizens and extort motorists. In the North, Islamic police (Hisbah) arrest Nigerian police for drinking alcohol. In the South, police arrest vigilantes that drink alcohol and label them criminals. In the North, Northern youths can kill innocent Southerners and no one will arrest them.
